We have supported Olveston Bowling Club with a donation towards the purchase of disability equipment. The club has a vision to provide all inclusive facilities to enable people with disabilities to take part in the sport of bowls, safely and securely. Our Giant Easter Egg Raffle made nearly £1,000. The proceeds went to the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC). |

George Hunter has been raising money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
In George’s own words, “Due to some unfortunate turn of events, I had to have a shunt operation. This has currently left my hair in a state, with it half cut. I thought when I can have a haircut again why not raise money towards charity. The charity I am raising money for is the Royal Marsden cancer charity because close to home my Grandma currently has Leukemia.”
When we became aware of George’s Head Shave fundraising effort, we decided to help him achieve his target. George lives locally in Thornbury.
You can see the 'before' and 'after' photos of George along with our Youth Officer, Kevin, who presented him with a cheque for the charity. Well done George!

For this month’s guest speaker evening we were delighted to invite Great Western Air Ambulance. They are a charity organisation funded by local people and not the NHS, who can provide hospital level skills and equipment at the scene of an accident or medical incident often not available by a traditional ambulance. They gave a very informative talk where we learnt a lot, and at the end of the evening we presented a large donation towards the great work they do.

Thornbury Lions have been supporting Castle School in Thornbury for many years. We recently visited the school to present a sizeable donation to fund the purchase of Reverse Osmosis machines for their new Science laboratories. It was great to meet the science staff and hear their plans for the new Science building opening later this year, and they were delighted with our donation which will benefit students for many years.
The machines will be a great benefit to the school as they provide a more environmentally friendly sustainable method of producing purified water for experiments, compared to the existing high energy consuming distillation process they have been using for some time.

January
We recently donated to the Creative Card Company who meet weekly in Thornbury. They are a community group of adults with learning difficulties who make handmade greeting cards for all occasions, and sell them to shops and at craft fairs. This enhances their money handling skills, gives them independence and makes them feel part of the community. The funds will help update the equipment they use and expand the group.
Its great to see our donations helping the local community. We recently received a Thank-You from Asthma Relief, where since 2011 our donations have funded 17 Nebulisers (which have a lifespan of 5 years) at the Thornbury Health Centre, St Mary Street Surgery, Severn View Family Practice and Henderson Rehabilitation Unit at The Grace Centre. Over this time many patients have benefited from these machines, and without the support from our bookshop customers this would not have been possible. A Nebuliser is a small machine used to deliver asthma medication in mist form. It does this by vaporising the medication, which is then delivered by a face mask or mouthpiece.
